Abstract		Elderly patients may suffer from several illnesses simulatneously. It is of essential importance to assure good cooperation wit district nurses and relatives of such patients to provide control and safety of the drug therapy. If possible, drugs with controlled release, i.e. only once a day applications should be chosen. Politherapy should always be reconsidred when the question of a new drug emerges. Although there is a rising trend of self medication in European countries, the generalpractitioner is still and should be the key person to decide about, give advice,or prescribe a drug therapy.
