Abstract     Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is used routinely in the diagnostic procedure of tumourous liver lesions, but it is generally not recommended as a diagnostic method for hydatid disease, since complications, such as anaphylactic reaction or dissemination of the disease may occur. However it can accidentally be performed, if clinical data are not sufficient or suggestive of the disease. From January 1988 to April 1999 we analysed 2768 specimens obtained by FNAB of liver lesions, among which we diagnosed 38 cases of hydatid disease. No complications were observed in any of those patients during or after the procedure.
