Abstract     Classification of atrial fibrillation is based on following clinical characteristics: underlying disease, ventricular rate, time course, mode of onset of atrial fibrillation and electrophysiologic properties. Recent epidemiological data regarding the incidence and prevalence of atrial fibrillation as well as epidemiological data on risk factors for the occurrence of atrial fibrillation have been taken from the literature to be presented in this paper. The data are based on the results of the Framingham study going on for almost 40 years. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation increases with age, more rapidly in men than women. In advanced age it is the most frequent permanent rhythm disturbance.
