Abstract		The action of coumarins-antagonists of vitamin K, which are effective in the prevention of arterial and venous thromboembolism, is presented. Their effectiveness is controlled by prothrombin time expressed in INR (International Normalized Ratio). It is important to know the interaction of coumarins with other drugs, concomitant diseases and eating habits influencing the effectiveness of oral anticoagulant therapy. The cooperation of the patient is also very important. The most frequent complication is bleeding due to overdosis.
