Abstract     Gastrooesophageal reflux disease is the most common disease of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Tipical reflux symptoms are heartburn and acid regurgitation. The prevalence of heartburn in Western countries is 20-40 %. Atipical reflux symptoms are less common and include dysphagia, respiratory symptoms, noncardiac chest pain, hoarseness, globus sensation and tooth erosions. The course of disease is unpredictable. In most cases patients improve but sometimes disease results with complications which are strictures, Barret's oesophagus and adenocarcinoma.
