Abstract     The purpose of this research was to investigate the development of the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus in the hospital of Slovenj Gradec between 1925 and 1960. We examined primary sources that are preserved and available in the archives, and enriched them with oral sources. Diabetes Mellitus is treated from the historical, statistical and social point of view. We compared those with the present time and suggested directives for the future. Diabetes Mellitus is a state of chronic hyperglycaemia that originates from the lack of insulin or from resistance to its action. It was in 1923 that insulin was used for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus for the first time. In Slovenj Gradec that happened in 1927. The year of 1955 is the birthday of oral antidiabetics. In Slovenj Gradec they were used in 1957 for the first time (called Tolbusal). The number of diabetic patients was increasing through years, more and more people were affected at old age. While the time of hospitalisation was getting shorter, the number of implications of Diabetes Mellitus was getting larger. Diabetics were abandoned by the society; and the vital importance of their illness suffered a lack of attention. Many diabetics did not take their illness seriously enough, they did not obey the directives from their doctors and they caused many unnecessary implications. At present the efforts of physitians are directed mostly at the early diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus. A lot is expected from screening. The method is based on determination of glucose in blood in risk populations. Genetic researches represent another great oportunity to heal Diabetes Mellitus. History teaches us that Diabetes Mellitus is a problem of the whole society. Its treatment should therefore be taken seriously.
