Abstract     The author stresses that, dealing with the elderly, we are still full of prejudice and social stereotypes. Their needs, wishes and capabilities are not taken into consideration enough. It is important to know that old age is not a disease but rather a normal life process which has to be accepted and faced with. People age each in one's own way. Many elderly live an active life and are healthy, and many are faced with the troubles brought about by old age. Longevity and the quality of life depend to a large extent on genetic and many other factors. Health and psychophysical activity up to a late old age, however, depend mostly on the person's life style and his/her overall attitude regarding health and illness. The third life period lasts 30 to, 35 years which is a long time. It is proper to think about how we are going to spend the last third of our lives, even while we are still in an optimal mental and physical condition. The necessary conditions to achieve that are defined by the author as healthy living habits, balanced and healthy diet, regularphysical exercise, abstaining from smoking and drinking alcohol, and omitting other bad habits.
