Abstract     Rehabilitation programs and goals of rehabilitation treatment intended for elderly patients often have to be adapted to their reduced physical capacity. The changes of the latter are in part due to the changes inherent in old age though they most often result from heart and blood vessels diseases. The knowledge of the energy expenditure of rehabilitation programs allows us to prescibe suitable locomotion aids. Blood pressure and heart frequency measurements were used to determine which methods of physical and occupational therapy result in a greater stress upon the heart in patients after limb amputations, stroke, spinal cord lesion and hip injuries. These require closest attention while in the case of risk patients it is imperative to first determine exercise heart frequency and its monitoring. Concerning younger patients suffering from diseases that will reduce them to a life-long use of the wheelchair, greater attention has to be dedicated to the prevention of risk factors already in the period of primary rehabilitation.
