Abstract | Between 26th - 28th November, 1997 a cluster of four enteroviral infections occured in the group of newborns from the Department of Perinatology in Teaching Hospital Maribor. These, with Enterovirus infected newborns, were born on the same day -19th November, 1997. The three of them were more severely ill with symptoms of meningitis in front. Enterovirus had been detected in liquor by PCR assay. The fourth newborn who fell ill too, had had a discrete neurological problem in the form of extensive tremor, but diagnosis of enteroviral meningitis with polymerase chain reaction in liquor remained negative. Isolation precautions were introduced immediatly in form of cohort isolation of all patients with symptons of meningitis, and cohort isolation of contacts and probably contacts. The nurse team which was on duty that night of spreading this enteroviral infection, had also been temporary removed from the work place. With mentioned precautions we managed to stop that outbreak on the 28th November, 1997. Such outbreaks of nosocomial diseases can be prevented by timely recognition of infected and colonisated patients. | |
