Abstract     As respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has become recognized as the leading cause of community and hospital acquired respiratory virus infections in childhood, we performed a prospective study during the three winter months in order to assess the incidence of RSV infection in children hospitalized at the Paediatric Department of General Hospital in Celje. Among 264 children aged 5 days to 17 years admitted to the peadric ward because of respiratory tract infections, at admission 19 children were found to be infected with RSV. The ages of those patients ranged from 3 weeks to 4 years. RSV infections predominated in infants (68 % infants: 22 % children older than 1 year). 47% of children had bronchitis, 37% had upper respiratory tract infections and 16 % had pneumonia. The average length of stay in hospital was 8 days. No complications of RSV infections were found. No patient acquired nosocomial RSV infection during the survey. Reasons for that were: low incidence of hospitalized children with community acquired RSV infections, isolation precautions, hand washing afer contact with the patient, short hospitalizations and restrictions in number of visiting persons. The study shows low incidence of hospitalized children with community acquired RSV infections and no incidence of hospital acquired RSV infections in children.
