Abstract     The rapid increase of cardiac and vascular diseases has brought us new comprehension, and with the improvement of diagnostic methods we were also able to increase the number of patients receiving effective help. In everyday practice we are confronted with the acute, subacute and chronic form of the disease. From the pathophysiologic viewpoint it is clear that acute arterial occlusion represents a great risk, regardless of whether a previously obliterated or a previously intact artery is occluded. Unfortunately, patients from urban areas with satisfactory health care conditions very rarely visit a physician in due time to receive adequate treatment. In my opinion it is necessary to speak about acute arterial obliteration. The causes leading to the occurrence of acute obliteration are arterial embolisms and thromboses. Embolisms are more frequent, occurring mostly owing to cardiopathy, while thromboses are the result of arteriosclerotic occurrences. The most frequently applied method of treatment is surgical (90%), but conservative treatment is just as important. The stated statistical data were taken from the Maribor Hospital annual report for 1991 and 1992.
