Abstract     Varicella is one of the most frequent childhood diseases. The course of the disease is usually mild and uncomplicated. Varicella is a notifiable infectious disease in Slovenia. In the time period of twenty years (from 1979 to 1998) from 11.086 (in year 1994) to 21.141 (in year 1987) varicella cases were reported. The highest incidence of varicella was notified in children aged from twelve month to two years during the last ten years. The incidence was slightly increased in patients aged over 30. In spite of high number of cases, the number of hospitalised varicella patients was low. Herpes zoster (HZ) results from reactivation of latent VZV, which has the ability to establish a lifelong infection in human sensory ganglia. The attack, rate of HZ is 10-20%. Primary care physicians treated 5.623 patients with HZ in year 1997. More than half of the patients were 50 years or older. A low proportion was treated in hospital, only a small number of complications were observed.
