Abstract     Infections with herpes simplex virus typ-1 are common in children and usually are mild or inapperent. However serious and often fatal illness can occur in neonates, immunocompromised host or patients with encephalitis. Polymerase chain reaction to herpes simplex virus and MRI has revolutionized the area, primarly through the capacity to rapidly diagnose and monotoring herpes simplex virus infections especially of central nervous system. Acyclovir is the drug of choice for parenteral therapy. Valacyclovir and famciclovir are newer antiviral agents that are effective and safe for the treatment of some local herpetic infections in adults. Clinical experiences in children are lacking. To suppress frequently recurrent herpes simplex infections prophylaxis with acyclovir or other antiviral agents should be considered. This review focuses on the recent developments in the areas of clinical manifestations, diagnoses, therapy and prophylaxis.
