Abstract		In our country megaloblastic anemias due to folate and vitamin B12 deficiency are quite frequent. Our paper gives the basic pathophysiologic interpretation of the occurrence of the disease, lists its most frequent causes, the basic diagnostic procedures and states the guidelines for its treatment. Pernitious anemia, occurring with increasing frequency in the younger population as a result of autoimmune chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa, is described in detail.
