Abstract | The paper describes the characteristics by which hemolytic anemias are recognized and distinguished from other types of anemia. Hemolytic anemia is characterized by an increased reticulocyte count, by jaundice, increased activity of the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase, the presence of urobilinogen, hemosiderin or hemoglobin in urine, positive Coombs' test, the presence of cold agglutinins. Among normal erythrocyte cells of the peripheral blood smear we note an increased number of normoblasts, the presence of schizocytes, spherocytes and drepanocytes. Additional data regarding the type of hemolysis are obtained from osmotic resistance tests, erythrocytic enzyme determination, hemoglobin electrophoresis and the Ham test. The presence of hemolytic anemia is ultimately confirmed or refuted by determining the erythrocyte life-span. | |
