Abstract     In chronic diseases anemia is a common clinical syndrome characterized by low serum iron concentration and iron-binding capacity but sufficient iron stores in bone marrow. Anemia occurs for several reasons. Important is the role of cytokins which either bear a direct influence on erythrocyte precursors, disturb iron metabolism or they act by way of erythropoietin (EPO). In anemia within the complex of chronic disease there is no adequate EPO response to anemia. Three cases are presented in which recombinant EPO was also added to the treatment of the basic disease. The patients responded well to the therapy and are now on maintenance treatment with EPO. Hemoglobin is over 110 g/L in all cases.
