Abstract     The review article describes the normal development of the breasts and basic physiology of lactation. In paper the average composition and quantity of the colostrum, transitory and mature breast milk is described. The benefits of the breast feeding with the defense mechanisms against bacterial and viral infections in the first place and the protection against the gastroenterocolitis is summarized. The influence of the breast milk on frequency of the allergic disorders and the solute load in infants' plasma is described. The breast milk has a beneficent influence on the infants' growth and development as much as it could enhance the bonding processes between mother and her newborn child. Despite of being the most appropriate way of feeding newborn and young infant, the breast feeding could in certain circumstances bring about its hazards for the infant's or his mother's health. In the first place there are the inborn errors of metabolism in newborn, which could deteriorate by breast feeding. Most of the mother's medications could pass into breast milk as much as the environmental pollutants which are concentrated in the breast milk during elimination from the organism. There are several viral and bacterial infectious agents which could be transmitted by the breast milk from mother to her infant. The breast feeding prologs the infertility period in the lactating women, but it could also cause psychological depression and the malnutrition of women with the transitory bone rarefication. In the year 1996 in Slovenia there were 90.0% women who had begun with the exclusive breast feeding of their newborn babies, next 6.2% breast fed their babies partially and 3.7% of women have never started breast feeding. The promotion of breast feeding in Slovenia is conducted by National committee for breast feeding promotion which is part of Slovenian committee for UNICEF. The Baby friendly hospital initiative has been started in the year 1996.
