Abstract     Arterial blood gas analysis is essential diagnostic procedure in critically ill patient. It allows determination of the degree of arterial blood oxygenation and acid base status of the organism. The patient with acute derrangement of vital organ function is compromised also by inadequate tissue oxygenation and correction of arterial blood oxygenation is a crucial step in urgent management of such patient. Acid base status of arterial blood allows us to differentiate acute vs. chronic acidosis and alkalosis and the same blood sample can be used to determine blood glucose and electrolyte concentrations.
