Abstract | Oxygen therapy is directed to the reversal of hypoxemia and the correction and protection from tissue hypoxia. Supplemental oxygen therapy is appropriate in acute conditions when there is laboratory documentation of a Pa02 below 8 kPa or when the arterial saturation is below 90 percent. The dosage of oxygen prescribed should be such as to correct the hypoxemia. Oxygen transport in blood is determined by lung function, concentration and quality of hemoglobin and sufficient cardiac output. Adequate data for the efficacy of long term oxygen therapy exist only for COPD. | |
