Abstract     Syncope is a common clinical problem. 30% of all individuals are likely to have a syncopal episode in their lifetime. 3 to 5% of all emergency room admissions are for syncope. Careful history, physical examination and electrocardiography provide a diagnosis in 50% of patients. At least 30% of all patients with syncope are categorized as having syncope of unknown origin in spite of expanded evaluation. Because the range of prognoses in syncope is wide, the emergency care physician's principal initial task is to distinguish between benign and life threatening causes of syncope.
