Abstract     Paracetamol is one of the most commonly used drugs in cases of deliberate self-poisoning in England and some other countries. If an over-dose is taken in the psychiatric hospital, a psychiatrist can influence costs and efficacy of management and prevent from unnecessary complications by providing the initial assessment, management and appropriate referral. At the Maudsley Hospital in London, a protocol on management of simple paracetamol poisoning in psychiatric inpatients has been followed. Its main component is application of methionin and simultaneous monitoring of paracetamol plasma levels in patients who take less than 150mg/kg. In remaining cases, the intoxicated are mainly treated by intravenous N-acetylcysteine. Protocol is of great value for patients as well as for liaison between physicians and psychiatrists.
