Abstract     Because of its potentially serious consequences, acute chest pain is one of the most urgent medical conditions. Angina pectoris with acute myocardial infarction, dissection of the aorta, pulmonary embolism and pneumothorax pose an immediate threat to life. Accurate diagnosis of chest pain depends upon history, physical examination, laboratory findings, radiologic studies, ultrasound, and radionuclide and MR imaging. The paper describes immediate diagnostic and therapeutic manoeuvres to be employed in patients with unstable angina pectoris and acute myocardial infarction by lay people and by prehospital and hospital emergency service. Close monitoring and adherence to the established protocol are fundamental to an effective management of acute myocardial infarction and other conditions manifested
