Abstract     Acute chest pain is one of the most common complaints in medicine. It may be a symptom of cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neural, gastrointestinal or functional disorders. As nurses are often the first healt care proffesionals to come in contact with the patient who is experiencing acute chest pain, they are frequently responsible for rapidly differentiating the more serious conditions, which carry the risk of sudden death from many less serious causes of chest pain. The major tool of assessment used by the nurse in evaluating acute chest pain is the health history regarding the pain which is then followed by basic techniques of examination (ECG, vital signs, general survey of the patient). Appropriate therapeutic interventions can be initiated. Rapid diagnosis and immediate intervention can alter clinical outcome. During the initial assessment, the nurse must display to the distressed patient an empathetic, calming confidence.
