Abstract     The classic presentation of hypoglycemia involves a diaphoretic patient with a history of diabetes mellitus (DM) who is found with an altered mental status. The hypoglycemic patient's presentation, however, may lead the physician to belive that the altered mentation may have been caused by some other condition such as a cere- brovascular accident, convulsion, ingestion, or head trauma. This report illustrates the importance of considering hypoglycemia in patients who present with alterations in consciousness and have risk issues that may cause hypo- glycemia, including diabetes mellitus and chronic alcohol abuse, even when the clinical observations appear to be explained by other findings. Rapid bedside screening of the serum glucose level is easily performed; its use should be considered in the CVA patient.
