Abstract     Systolic blood pressure continues to increase in both men and women until about 80 years of age. Therefore hypertension, particularly elevated systolic blood pressure, emerges as the dominant risk factor for CAD in older individuals of both genders. In fact, hypertension increases the absolute risk for clinical CAD to a greater extent in older than in younger person. Progressive elevation of systolic blood pressure with advancing age confers also increased risk for stroke and other cardiovascular disease events in both elderly men and women. Total serum cholesterol peaks in men at about 60 years of age, but continues to increase in women until they are about 75 years old. Elevated plasma lipid, particularly when confounding concomitant risk factors are taken into account, still confer an increased risk for clinical events resulting from CAD in older persons up to the age of 70 years. Therefore the current opinion is to treat elevated blood pressure and plasma lipids in older individuals who are already diagnosed as having CAD, in order to prevent a subsequent clinical events.
