Abstract     The effect of four hypolipidemic agents with different mechanisms of action on rat plasma, liver and adipose tissue PChE, as well as on plasma cholesterol and triglycerides has been investigated. The rats received with their food about 90 mg/kg/day fenofibrate, 190 mg/kg/day probucol,1100 mg/kg/day colestipol and 200 mg/kg/day nicotinic acid for 15 days. PChE activity was determined by the spectrophotometric method of Ellman. All the drugs investigated decreased cholesterol concentration significantly. Triglyceride concentratios were decreased by fenofibrate, and nicotinic acid, colestipol and probucol having no effect. PChE activity was increased in the plasma of rats treated with fenofibrate and in the adipose tissue of rats treated with nicotinic acid. Since, according to our results, as well as to data reported by other authors, decreased plasma triglyceride levels have been observed simultaneously with increased PChE activity, the involvement of PChF in triglyceride hydrolysis, probably in conjunction with LPL, seems very probable.
