Abstract     This paper outlines the forms of treatment available to a physiotherapist in the treatment of female patients with urinary continence problems. Urinary incontinence in women is more common than in men on a ratio of about 3:1. A thorough assessment is essential in order for the physiotherapist to be as certain as possible that physical therapies are appropriate. Assessment will have determined whether such things as immobility, lack of strength, pain on movement, distance to the toilet, drugs or any other factor extrinsic to the patient's urinary system are the cause or contribute to the patient's continence difficullties. It may be that attention to these will solve the problem. A competent physiotherapist is always considering every patients continence status, whatever their presenting condition, trying to promote continence and maintain or regain independence in voiding and defecation as far is humanly possible.
