Abstract     The regions Primorje and Kras have both problems with lack of sources of drinking- water. The scarsity of provisions of underground water and a greater threat are conitioned by the carsic soil. Hydrogeological research, good knowledge of characteristic properties of the source and of the probable sources of pollution and the systematical overview of the quality are very important for the protection of the sources of drinking water. The Institute of Public Health of Koper performs bacteriological and phisically- chemical analyses of the samples of drinking water from sources of drinking water and from the waterworks in the regions Kras, Primorje, the regions of Ilirska Bistrica and Postojna. The equipment and the qualified personnel make possible the performance of very demanding analyses, and longlasting observation enable us to estimate the possible influences on the quality of water. We would like to describe two cases of observation of the quality and hygienic suitability of the water, which present the nature of two important water sources in our region - the sources Klariči and Rižana. The characteristic of the drinking water from the source Klariči (which supplies water to the regions Kras, Sežana and in minor part the Primorje) is the high mineralization, caused by the high concentration of chlorides. The quantity of the chlorides in the water oscilates, it is minor in periods of strong precipitations and in longer perioda without rain. The diminuition of chlorides in the periods of major precipitations is due to the fast infiltration of the water on the collecting carsic ground, in periods of drought the fact is due to the afflux of the underground water of the river Soča.
