Abstract     Gastrointestinal angiodysplasia, with its incidence of 1-3%, may cause intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown origin. Only 5 % of all angiodysplasias are in the ileum. Methods and results. A case of a patient with intermittent anaemia of unknown origin with concomitant arterial hypertension and chronic renal failure is reported. At last, when massive chemochezia developed, acute bleeding from angiodysplasia of the small intestine was demonstrated by angiography after prior exclusion of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding and acute bleeding from the colon. Acute bleeding did not stop by medical therapy. The patient was operated. Histological specimen of the resected small bowel demonstrated ectatic vessels in submucosa. Conclusions. Angio dysplasia of the small intestine is responsible for intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown origin in the elderly with concomitant cardiovascular diseases. Angiography is a procedure, that is diagnostic.
