Abstract     Respiratory failure is classified according to both anatomic and physiologic considerations. Whatever the couse, the final common pathway in respiratory failure is the inability of the respiratory system to need the metabolic demands of the body for oxygenation and carbon dioxide excretion. Although signs and simptoms of respiratory distress often accompany respiratory failure this is not invariabily and arterial blood gas measurement is required to verify inadequate oxygenation and carbon dioxide excretion. Respiratory failure is the most common cause of cardiopulmonary arrest in newborns and infants. A specifc therapeutic regimen is based on the knowledge of respiratory physiology and of the developmental stage of the patient.
