Abstract     Background and purpose: Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) may proceed a stroke in high risk patients who must be included into preventive programs. In order to identify a subgroup of TIA patients with high risk for stroke we studied the risk factors in 259 patients with TIAs and stroke. Patients and methods: We examined 146 patients with TIAs aged from 25 to 87 years (mean 61.8 years) and 113 patients with stroke aged from 18 to 79 years (mean 58.3 years). The risk factors: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, family history, cardiac diseases, lipids, weight, alcohol consumption, oral contraceptives, cogarette smoking and physical activity were evaluated and compared between patients with TIA and stroke. Results: We founda high statisticaly significant prevalence of hypertension (p=0.027), diabetes (p=0.016) and cigarette smoking (p<0.01) in patients with stroke with respect to TIAs. The groups did not differ significantly according to other risk factors. Conclusions: A subgroup of high risk patients exists among TIAs. Furthermore, the atherosclerotic process is more pronounced in patients with stroke.
