Abstract     In Slovenia we have observed recently the epidemic of various drugs misuse also among the female population of fertile age. Owing to the data from field help programmes for drug dependent persons it is evident that the percentage of female persons coming to STIGMA organisation for the kit, is increasing each year. In the year 1992 there were slightly more than 19 % of women and in 1997 there were already 26%. According to some sources, there are now more than 10.000 heroin dependent persons in Slovenia. For the year 1998 official data quote the number 5.000 (1) for Slovenia. If there are 26% of female addicts among drug addicts, it means that there are at least 1300 women, who can become pregnant. Considering the presumption of having more than 10.000 heroin dependent persons, the risk group rises to more than 2600 women. When they get pregnant, women ask them selves a lot ot questions, but many times they can not find a satisfying answer to them. The use of different drugs between the pregnant women is similarly important expert dilemma for all experts meeting with those wonen before and during the fertility period. Undoubtedly, drugs have its effect on child in mothers body The effects of drugs on child can be seen immediately after the birth as lower birth weight. Later as the child grow the differences between children of drug abusing mother and non drug abusing mother get smaller. Health service must help pregnant woman, dependant on psycho active substances in coping the every day problems. In this article, some of essential tasks of health service in this field are listed. From the sociomedical point of view health workers need to be educated as soon as possible in this field too with the purpose to insure better health care for drug abusing pregnant women.
