Abstract     Indications, contraindications and the techniques of diagnostic laparoscopy are presented. The laparoscopy has become an essential part of multimodal approach to gynecological diseases. The role of laparoscopy is evidenced by analysis of 20 387 laparoscopies at the University women hospital Ljubljana in period from 1971-1997. In the diagnostic algorhytm the laparoscopy is complementary to vaginal ultrasound which is a less invasive diagnostic procedure. The invasiveness of diagnostic laparoscopy is compensated by advanced surgical possibilities providing difinite histologic diagnosis and definite surgical treatment with all advantages of minimal access surgery. According to development of operative techniques the laparoscopy loses the character of a purely diagnostic procedure.
