Abstract     The line passing through the nasion, the subnasale and the gnathion, the bipupillary line and the actual prosthetic plane of the intercanine segment form the basis for the appraisal of facial asymmetry. A completely symmetrical face may look plain and dull. A moderate degree of asymmetry gives the face a special character, makes it interesting and attractive. Facial asymmetry becomes more pronounced during facial expression, during speech and with advancing age. The occlusal rim, which must cover also the abutment teeth, plays an important part in fixed prosthetic rehabilitation of the intercanine segment. It is modelled in the patients mouth, taking into account the prosthetic plane, the shape of the dental arch and the median line. All these parameters are essential for aesthetic modelling of the dental arch and must be transferred into the articulator. A silicone impression of the occlusal rim is a valuable aid in further modelling and subsequent facetting of the construction.
