Abstract     Motivation plays an important part in preventive dental care of children and adults. Goals can be achieved if patients understand what is expected of them and if they are convinced that the final goal is worth their cooperation. The patient should participate in preparing the plan of dental treatment, and he should be encouraged to cooperate in all its phases. Working with a group is different from working with an individual. In children, the approach adopted will depend on their age. Our aim is to teach children to take care of their dental health and to make them aware of its importance. Our orientation should always be positive. In case of failure, the reasons for the lack of motivation should be examined, and constructive criticism should be imparted in a sincere and direct way. Confidence is the key to success. It can be secured if there is no doubt in fulfilment of the promised goals.
