Abstract		Echocardiography is the most important non-invasive method for the assessment of cardiac function in critically ill patients. It also enables a rapid and accurate etiological diagnosis in hemodynamically unstable patients, therefore transesophageal approach is frequently used. Both techniques enable a reliable evaluation of the overall and regional function of the ventricles, the preload and afterload. In addition, the diagnostic problems which require specific treatment can be recognized.
Summary		Ehokardiografija je najpomembnejša neinvazivna preiskava za oceno srčne funkcije pri kritično bolnih. Omogoča tudi hitro in natančno opedelitev vzroka nenadne hemodinamske nestabilnosti. Transtorakalna preiskava je pri takšnih bolnikih pogosto nezadostna, zato vedno pogosteje opravimo transezofagealni pregled. Z obema preiskavama lahko zanesljivo opredelimo globalno in regionalno funkcijo prekatov, preload in upor proti iztisu ter bolezni in stanja, ki zahtevajo neposredno specifično zdravljenje.
