Abstract     This prospective study shows the use of the Extended Barthel Index with acute ischaemic stroke patients. It was done at the Medical Center, Neurology Department, Ljubljana, Slovenia. The Extended Barthel Index, the longer version based on the original Barthel Index was tested for its validity and reliability. The results showed that this is a reliable, three - dimensional scale which has a concurrent validity. It is more sensitive to the changes in functional status that occurs in the first six weeks post stroke than the original Barthel Index. Both scales, however, may be too crude to, alone, guide the occupational therapy treatment intervention, but they could serve as an indicator for further occupational therapy assessment or they could guide discharge destination. The Extended Barthel Index, to some extent, reveals also the level of handicap.
