Abstract     Chronic diarrhoea in infancy, usually accompanied by malapsorption and severe malnutrition, constitutes a major therapeutic challenge. The choice of an appropriate diet is the principle option of treatment in such cases. On hand of the reports in literature we opted for a chicken-based modular diet in 9 children whose symptoms of chronic diarrhoea and malnutrition had not improved in spite of all the semielemental formuli or dietary regimes available to us. The initial formula contains 5 % of carbohydrates and 0.8 '% of proteins. In the course of the modulation we first increase the quantity of proteins up to a concentration of 2.4 %, followed by an increase in the content of fat from 1 to 4% and, eventually, carbohydrates from 5 to max 10%. The rate of modulation depends on the state of the childd's health and can vary from a few days to several weeks. The results prove that modular diet is favourable. During the first week of the treatment diarrhoea ceased gradually and an increase in weight was observed in all children. After one month a considerable improvement in the clinical picture and a weight gain of 800 to 1200 grams was recorded. Considering the simplicity in the preparation of the diet as well as its effectiveness and low cost we highly recommend the use of modular diet prepared at the hospital in the treatment of children with chronic diarrhoea and malnutrition.
