Abstract     Sanitary inspection in Ljubljana started in 1974 to register the bacteriological tests of critical points in kindergartens and nurseries. Wet swabs have been collected and tested for bacteria. At that time 511 swabs have been investigated. We found 227 (44%) swabs which were from hygienic point of view unacceptable. Nurseries and kindergartens were again investigated 21 years later and 944 swabs were taken and bacteriologically investigated. The percentage of hygienically unacceptable swabs was reduced to 3,7%. Which were the changes in hygienic conditions in nurseries and kindergartens that have contributed to such an improvement of bacteriological tests? - Improved education of the staff employed - Implementation of internal control for hygienic conditions - Reduction of the number of children in nurseries and kindergartens and normalization of the capacity of kitchens in contrast to previous 1-2 times overcharged capacities - No more small babies in the nurseries as the leave for mothers after delivery was prolonged - Washing of kitchen utensils by machines - Exaggerated use of disinfectants.
