Abstract     Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in retinal light sensitivity following blunt ocular trauma and to determine the correlation between changes in retinal light sensitivity and age of the patients, the size of hyphema and the extent of angle recession. Patients and methods: The study includes 29 patients hospitalized between 1993 and 1997 for blunt uncular trauma with hyphema. In all patients a threshold visual field analysis was carried out with the C30-2 program of the automated Humphrey Filed Analyzer. Results: In 14 eyes (48.3%) a significant loss of retinal sensitivity with a MD (mean deviation) under 5% was found. A correlation between visual field loss and the size of hyphema could not be established. The same is true of the extent of angle recession. The reduction of retinal sensitivity (MD p values <0.05) was significant higher in older patients (p<0.01). Discussion: Our study shows that visual field defects after blunt ocular trauma can be detected sooner than the ophtalmoscopically visible changes on the posterior segment. They are also more significant in older patients.
