Abstract     This research on breast-feeding was conducted with 881 randomly selected Slovenian mothers who had given birth in January and February, 1992. During the term of the survey the children were about 15 months old. The average age of the mothers was 26.2 years. The mothers' educational levels were uniformly close to completion of the secondary school level (12 years). On average they had 1.67 children per family. Of the total surveyed, 22 mothers or 2:5% did not breast-feed their babies; 38 mothers or 4.3% had not finished breast-feeding at the time of the survey. The average duration of breast-feeding time of mothers who stopped breast-feeding before or at 15 months of the baby's age is 159.1 days. Factors which influenced longer breast-feeding time were: living in the city, living together with a partner, the mother having a secure income, attending maternity school, deciding before the birth to breast-feed, neglecting to mention problems attendant to breast-feeding, spoon feeding liquids, the mothers having an 11-12 year level or more of education, a mother being well-informed about breast-feeding, feeding the infants eight or more times daily in the first month and giving the first feeding within twelve hours after the birth. During the multivariational regression analysis, the factor which changed the most was the way the baby was spoon-fed liquids. Other characteristics were daily number of feedings, the birth order of the baby, maternity school education, and other education on the subject of breast-feeding. Significantly, breast-feeding among Slovenian mothers is on the rise and approaching six months which is the recommended duration for this practice: Nevertheless, much more could be done to educate medical staff to promote and support the healthy practice of breast-feeding.
