Abstract | From 1981, lindan was used in Slovenia in very low amounts, and it is not used any more from 1993. However, because of its stability and presence in the soil for many years, we can find it in human body, among others also in human milk. This topic has not been investigated in our country yet. We were interested in the concentration of lindan in colostrum ( milk which is lactated immediately after childbirth), as well as the connection between the concentration of lindan in colostrum and weight gainance in the time of pregnancy, the age of women in labour, and eating of fats. Lindan was defined in colostrum of 30 coincidentally chosen women in labour from Pomurje, who all work in agriculture. The concentration of lindan was defined by the means of gas chromatography. The average concentration of lindan in colostrum was 0,005 +- 0,009 mg/kg of fats, with the highest concentration of 0,037 mg/kg and lowest concentration of 0,0008 mg/kg of fat. There was not found any connection between the concentration of lindan, the age of women in labour, and their weight gainance. With women in labour who tend to eat higher amounts of fats, the concentration of lindan in colostrum is higher. The results of investigation show the need for control of lindan concentration, as well as other polichlorinated pesticides in human milk, especially in agricultural areas where higher amounts of pesticides are used. The additional education of farmers in the reasonable use of pesticides is also necessary. | |
