Abstract     The aim of this study was to lay down the first dietary guidelines and principles in the nutrition of the Slovene Army. First dietary changes were made. Modifications following the latest nutritional recommendations were introduced into their nutrition. Energy value met the demands of the calculated energy expenditure due to physical activity in military training. The Slovene nutrition habits were taken into account where possible. In prospective epidemiological study both the acceptability and nutritional as well as energy adequacy of the modificated diet were tested on 70% of the population of recruits. Body height, body weight and subscapular; abdominal and thigh skinfolds were measured three times in six months. Total body fat per cent and relative body weight were calculated. Recruits were interviewed at the end of the military service. The weight inereased and relative body fat per cent significantly diminished. In general the recruits were satisfied with the nutrition facilities, the quality and quantity of meals. However they missed more fruit in the diet. Only 13,2% of recruits do not smoke and do not drink alcohol. The results support the conclusion that the stated norms and dietary guidelines are adequate for army recruits nutrition.
