Abstract     Piysiologic recommendations for nutrition determine that 4 to 6 year-old children in kindergarten have to obtain breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. These meals should cover 70% of energy needs for a child per day (which is 1600 kcal). We wanted to find out whether the caloric value of meals and biologic value of lunches deviate from standards. Five kindergartens were included in the study. We analysed the samples of all meals that pre-school children got in the kindergarten for one week during the period between May 1995 and January 1996. We analysed 65 meals. Mean caloric value of breakfasts was 18%, of lunches 21%, and of daily meals 24% below recommendations. Afternoon snack was delivered in only 3 of 5 kindergartens. We found out that quantity of fats and proteins in lunches was below recommendations, quantity of carbohydrates even 29% below recommendations. The energetic density of food of lunches was 3,8 kJ/g. We conclude that food in kindergartens was energetically insufficient. The quantity of fats, proteins and especially carbohydrates in lunches was insufficient. The energetic density of lunches was below the recommmended values.
