Abstract     Healthy life means the way of living that promotes health and prevents the development of some chronic noncommunicable diseases. In our country and also in others these are: cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer, diabetes and chronic lung diseases. They present also the most often cause of death. Some common risk factors (unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco smoking; alcoholism, elevated blood pressure, elevated serum cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, overweight) have a major role in the etiology of these diseases. An overview (in year 1990/91) of a random sample of inhabitants from Ljubljana, age 25 to 64 (N=1692) demonstrated that there are only few inhabitants in Ljubljana with none of the above mentioned risk factorsa present (N 20) and 29% of the individuals have borderline values. All others have high values of the measured risk factors, they smoke, drink alcohol over reasonable amounts and are physically inactive. The biggest proportion of the population has only one risk factor present. The risk factors most often present are tobacco smoking followed by elevated serum cholesterol (cholesterol 6.5 mmol/1 or more). Healthy life means a healthy diet, regular physical activity, life without active or passive tobacco smoking and drinking alcohol over reasonable amounts. It means also that everyone should care for his own health in an active way. Numerous epidemiological studies demonstrate, that we can prevent or at least postpone the development of risk factors important in the etiology of most chronic noncommnunicable diseases only with a healthy life style.
