Abstract     Elevated blood sugar is an important risk factor for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. We can find elevated blood sugar more often in individuals with a positive family history of elevated blood sugar and in those older than 40 years. Unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and overweight are also predictive factors for development of elevated blood sugar. An overview (in year 1990/91) of a random sample of inhabitants from Ljubljana, age 25 to 64 (N=1692) demonstrated that 4% have diabetes mellitus. This is in concordance with the prevalence of this disease in Slovenia. Only 43% of them had a normal fasting sugar blood value (<5.6 mmol/1) while all others have borderline elevated values. 21% of them had a positive family history, 69% are overweight and 15% are not practicing any physical activity. Primary prevention of elevated blood sugar is based on a healthy life syle and keeping or reducing body weight to normal before the age of 40. Similar are the recommendation for secondary prevention. The recommendations for a heallhy diet are to eliminate food that contains plain sugars without decreasing the amount of carbohydrates. With a healthv life style we can prevent or at least postpone the development of elevated blood sugar.
