Abstract     Body overweight (BO) is an important risk factor for development of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and some types of cancer: It is also a predictive factor for other risk factors (elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, elevated serum cholesterol). Risk factors for BO are: family history of BO, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and irregular monitoring of body weight. In an overview of a sample (N=1692) of inhabitants from Ljubljana we evaluated their dietary habits with the help of a dietary questionnaire and to evaluate their state of nourishment we used the body mass index (BMI). Only half of them had a normal body weight, but most of them were already found to be physically inactive and had an unhealthy diet. Too often pork and entrails are part of their menu. They use animal fat and cracklings for cooking. White bread is more often on the table than black and fresh fruits and vegetables are not part of their everyday diet. BO can be prevented with a healtliy life style - with a healthy diet, pliysical activity and regular monitoring of body weight. When the body weight is moderately elevated we recommend a partially measured diet and when it is elevated substantially a measured diet to reduce body weight.
