Abstract     Present intention of healthy nutrition is reduction of fat content in food. To achieve that we have to recognise and select low fat food items. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of people about fat content in food. 107 people (43 males and 64 females) were interviewed. They had to complete a questionnaire with percentage estimations in 5 greasy foods, 5 milk products, 5 sorts of meat and 4 meat products. The answers were ranged and analysed according to sex and BMI. Ranging of foods regarding fat content was mainly incorrect. The nearest to the real value was the fat estimation in gauda cheese, in all other foods it was overestimated. There were significant differences between male and female participants in estimation of fat content in skim cottage cheese, soured cream, roast chicken, processed cheese, margarine and eggs. The most significant overestimation of fat content was done by obese people (BMI > 30). The results demonstrate consumers wrong ideas about fat contents in foods. To achieve higher level of nutritional education more verbal and written information are needed. Also, labelling of food products should be simple, clear and understandable.
