Abstract     Background. It is well known that aging is connected with the reduction of many physiological functions. However, there has been growing evidence that caloric restriction or increased physical activity may attenuate this reduction, resulting in the retardation of the aging process. Conclusions. In the paper, we searched the literature and analyzed phenomena that are currently taught to cause aging including oxygen stressgiving rise to reactive oxygen species as well asglycosylation of proteins in thepresence of glucose and oxygen giving rise to A GEproducts. Particular attention is paid for molecular and cellular explanation of macroscopic manifestations of aging, and of some common diseases, like heart failure, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Finally, we tried to identify those molecular mechanisms connected with caloric restriction or increased physical activity, which influence physiological variables to change in the same sense as to oppose aging.
Summary     Izhodišča. Staranje je povezano z upadanjem mnogih fzioloških funkcij. V zadnjem času pa je vse več dokazov, da lahko omejitev kalorij v prehrani in zvečana telesna aktivnost zavreta upadanje teh funkcij, kar se kaže z upočasnitvijo procesa staranja. Zaključki. V članku smo analizirali pojave, za katere se danes misli, da so vzrok staranju. Gre zlasti za oksidacijske procese in neencimsko polimerizacijo beljakovin v prisotnosti glukoze in kisika. Pri prvih nastajajo snovi ROS, pri drugi pa produkti AGE. Opisali smo, kako se našteti molekularni in celični procesi izrazijo na ravni organov ne le pri staranju, ampak bistveno prispevajo k etiopatogenezi nekaterih pogostih bolezni, npr pešanju srca, sladkorni bolezni ali aterosklerozi. Končno smo skušali najti molekularne mehanizme za razlago, da omejevanje kalorij v prehrani ali zvečana telesna aktivnost vplivata na fiziološke spremenljivke v nasprotni smeri kot staranje.
