Abstract     The aim of our study was to investigate the bacteria involved in chronic periapical periodontitis (COO). Forty-seven CPP samples, obtained after apisoectomy, were examined by histological and bacteriological analyses. 12.0% of the samples were sterile, the others had significant aerobic and anaerobic growth. Mixed bacterial infections were present. The samples were divided into two groups with with regard to the predominant colonising bacteria that accounted for more than 80% of the growth. The first group comprised streptococcal CPP with a predominance of oral streptococci. The second group included samples of anaerobic CPP, colonised predominantly by strict anaerobes (Bacteroides spp. P. acnes, Veillonella spp.). There was no correlation between the bacterial growth, clinical status and histological structure of CPP.
